Our October issue offers a wide variety of stories large and small, including new entries about Stephen Baxter’s wildly exotic and truly multilayered “Old Earth” and Amy Bechtel’s amiable sea monsters (and the veterinarian who cares for them). Stephen L. Burns kicks off his season with a neat bit of satire, while Catherine Shaffer and Dave Creek explore two very different kinds of human-alien interaction. We even have a small but tasty tidbit by that well-known alternate historian, Harry Turtledove.
Richard A. Lovett appears in two capacities, with a fictional something for the season and a very nonfictional article about “The Wired Ocean: Doing Oceanography Without Getting All Wet.” Current technology (no pun intended, he lied) provides quite a few ways to do frontier research in relative comfortand sometimes better than if the researcher were “on the spot.”
