February 2000
Often our covers are commissioned to illustrate a particular story
in an issue, but next month we reverse that usual procedure. Artist
Alan Clark recently challenged a group of writers to write stories
based on some of his standalone paintings, and Jerry Oltion came
up with one aptly titled "A Star Is Born" (the title means exactly
what it says!) that seemed well suited to lead off our February
issue. And since the painting already existed, it seemed only
fair that we ask Mr. Clark if we could use it for the cover. .
. .
The rest of the fiction includes a wide variety of stories by
such writers as Michael A. Burstein, Charles L. Harness, H.G.
Stratmann, and Dave Creek. Burstein's "The Quantum Teleporter"
looks suspiciously like the beginning of an intruguing new series,
and Creek's "A Glimpse of Splendor" is, we may hope, only our
first look at a fascinating world with a uniquely challenging
problem.
Finally, Ben Bova's fact article, "Slowboat to the Stars!" sounds
like it's about interstellar travel, and it isin part. But its
main subject is really biology, and the way in which research
in what seems an unrelated field may ultimately provide the solution
to the most vexing problem in spaceflight. |
